Looking for a simple, beginner-friendly dessert to make in your air fryer? This Portuguese egg tart recipe delivers silky smooth custard filling paired with crispy, buttery tart shells. No complicated baking skills required. You can make golden-brown tarts with beautiful caramelized spots at home in under 20 minutes.

Portuguese egg tarts are one of the most popular Asian bakery desserts. Store-bought versions are tasty, but homemade air fryer tarts taste fresher and let you adjust sweetness to your preference. This recipe is perfect for new bakers, kids’ snacks, weekend breakfast or small party desserts.

Ingredients

  • 150 ml milk
  • 1 whole egg
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 15 g condensed milk
  • A small amount of white sugar
  • Frozen egg tart shells

Optional upgrade: Replace 100 ml of milk with heavy cream for an even richer, creamier custard texture.

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine milk, whole egg, egg yolk, condensed milk and sugar. Whisk everything together until fully blended.
  2. Strain the custard mixture 3 to 4 times through a fine sieve. This step removes bubbles and lumps, which gives your filling a super silky texture and prevents cracks while baking.
  3. Preheat your air fryer. You do not need to thaw the frozen tart shells. Pour the filtered custard liquid into each shell.
  4. Cook at 200°C for 10–15 minutes. Keep an eye on the tarts. Stop cooking once you see nice golden caramel brown marks on the surface.
  5. If the bottom crust is not flaky enough after baking, remove the tin foil cups, flip the tarts over, and bake for another 3–5 minutes.

Tips

Do not skip straining the custard. It is the secret to smooth, restaurant-quality egg tarts. Watch closely during baking because air fryer temperatures vary. The caramelized burnt spots are the signature mark of authentic Portuguese egg tarts.

These warm egg tarts taste best fresh out of the air fryer. The shell is crispy, and the custard inside is soft and wobbly. This quick air fryer dessert will quickly become your go-to sweet snack.
